This has been a great car for me but I'm at the end of my rope with this one. Maybe someone here has some insights before I pour more money into it. I have a 2006 Mazda 3s sedan, with the 2.3L engine and automatic transmission. Back in December there was one goofy shift around 2nd gear which caused the AT light and Check Engine light to come on. I took it into a local transmission shop that seems reputable, and they checked all the easy stuff (sensors, etc) and said the problem must be internal, and wound up rebuilding it for $3700. They said it had a bad servo, whatever that means. After the rebuild, the CEL and AT light weren't on anymore, and all appeared to be well except for a few oddball shifts that I attributed the transmission "relearning". But then around New Years, the AT light came on again, shifts from first to second revved too high, and putting it from park into reverse was a violent affair. I took it back
to the trans shop, still under warranty, and they found that there was a blown fuse. Here's their diagnosis: Relief, right? Well a few weeks later it started acting up again - Violent shifting into reverse. This time I checked Fuse F47 before bringing it to the shop and it was fine, so I brought it back. They had the pan off, checked a bunch of things but said the solenoids and everything in the pan checked out OK, and it was a wiring problem and not covered by warranty. I told them to halt and that I would take it to the dealer, which
I did. Trans shop's notes say: Took it to the dealer and provided them with the above info. Dealer's diagnosis: Having already spent $3700+, and knowing that they wanted to replace the TCM, I knew I could replace that with relative ease for about $150 so I figured that was worth trying before letting the dealer rack up four-figure charges. I got a TCM from a nearby salvage yard but unfortunately installing a different TCM made no difference. I can take it back to the transmission shop, who knows the history of this particular car pretty well now but not Mazda3's overall, or I can take it back to the dealer and pay and arm and a leg per hour with no assurance that even thousands of dollars worth of work will result in a fix. Has anyone else come across anything like this? I came across one similar tale on here where the TCM replacement appeared to solve it, but unfortunately that didn't pan out for me... Shifting into reverse is still rough - I've been driving in such a way so as to avoid using reverse at all times. Downshifts from 5th to 4th can be slightly clunky sometimes, as is coming to a stop. Upshifts are generally good with the exception of 1st to 2nd, where the RPMs sometimes go higher than they should. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks in advance. 02-13-2020, 09:45 PMJunior Member Thread Starter Join Date: Feb 2020 Location: New York City Posts: 3 2006 Mazda 3 2.3L automatic transmission issuesHey guys! (120k miles) My boyfriend's mazda 3 has been nothing but troublesome out of no where. I was driving on the highway when out of no where it felt like we hit a pothole, yet the road was smooth. I looked at the gauge cluster and noticed the "AT" and the check engine light was on. The check engine light stayed on along with the AT light which would go away after a while then the car would jerk and go to AT again... Also the PRND column on the gauge cluster would also flicker and then go away, along with it showing what gear it was. So this is where it gets interesting. We found online that it is most likely the TCM and it is going bad. We found on ebay of a guy that fixes the mazda 3 TCM and we sent it out to them. We get it back a week later and the check engine light and the AT light was off -- Awesome! Then fast forward two days (today) as he was getting gas the car yet again slipped going 40mph in 5th gear. The strange thing about it this time is that the check engine didn't come on, though the AT light came on for a split second every time the transmission would slip. Then it would go back to normal and then 3 minutes later do it again with the AT light on for half a second then act totally normal again -- again no check engine light as well. I also put the car in accessory mode to see if the check engine light works, and it does work. Also the gauge cluster didn't have the PRND display go out again - so its a little different this time. Should I be looking at sensors at this point? I'm not sure why its doing it again and not giving off any codes. There is also no specks in the transmission fluid, although it is a little brown. I am going to change the transmission fluid, but at 110k miles I think its a normal color considering my 01' mercury grand marquis had much darker fluid with no issues. Also forgot to mention - I didn't get a copy of the codes when it happened the first time. Any recommendations would be awesome! Thanks! Also as shown the check engine light doesnt even come on. This does it as driving as well. 02-15-2020, 04:56 AM Join Date: May 2012 Location: Queensland Australia Posts: 6,830 Has the vehicle been scanned for diagnostic trouble codes? 02-16-2020, 06:05 PMJunior Member Thread Starter Join Date: Feb 2020 Location: New York City Posts: 3 Quote: Originally Posted by grim_reaper Has the vehicle been scanned for diagnostic trouble codes? we scanned it this morning and nothing Related TopicsThread Thread Starter Forum Last Post squatto02 Mazda Protege 1 12-18-2007 06:09 PM Oh6sixXx Mazda6 6 06-18-2007 07:06 AM miss_scott83 Electronics, Computer & Fuel Systems 0 11-28-2006 11:45 AM esloyer General Tech 1 11-20-2006 01:17 AM dewthenet Mazda6 2 09-23-2006 08:14 PM |
