I HATE Bank of America, due to many bad dealings with them when I was a customer of theirs for 30+ years.

Edd debit card transfer to bank account
Then I broke all ties with them in 2011.

Now that I’m stuck using their debit card, how is the best way to transfer my earnings off of my EDD debit card?

I went to my bank and they said that they could not take the money off the debit card and put it into my account, they gave me the option of going to Bank of America and doing a withdrawal (get cash or a bank check) and then coming back to my bank and making a deposit.

To make it easy for myself, I would rather pay my bills from my bank account and not use the Bank of America debit card for anything.

In the meantime, I’m going to look to see if I can have my Unemployment Insurance funds automatically transferred to my bank for all future Unemployment Insurance payments.

You should be able to go online to your BofA account and add/set up a bank for transfers. But they will need to verify your bank first, which took almost a week when I did it, because they only count "business days." Once bank is added for transfers through BofA you should be able to transfer out your UI benefits once they're deposited to BofA.

Hello scraprsmith,

Thank you for your help. Upon looking at my B of A EDD debit card account, I see there is an option for a "one-time" transfer and "recurring" transfer . . . to a checking or savings account. Since I have neither at B of A, I wonder if I put my checking account and routing number (of my current bank) as the transfer account information, will my funds automatically start going to my bank account (after B of A confirms the account, when I select recurring)?

Edd debit card transfer to bank account
I have never tried to transfer money online from one of my bank accounts to a different bank account I had at another bank before.
Edd debit card transfer to bank account
I wish that B of A clarified the option by stating something like "transfer to another financial institution and provide the account number and routing number".
Edd debit card transfer to bank account

All-in-all, I just trying to ensure that I don't accidentally get a B of A checking or savings by selecting the options I'm looking at on their website.

Also, now that you are able to transfer your money from B of A to your bank, do you have to manually do it or is it set up to automatically go to your bank account as soon as EDD pays you your U.I. funds?

When I did it I put in my bank information for checking account from another financial institution (routing number and account number). I didn't do recurring transfer. figured it was easy enough to check when UI funds hit BofA and then schedule a transfer. I don't like "recurring" anythings. I like to be in charge of my money's destiny LOL and how would you know exact date your UI money would hit the account. I wouldn't risk scheduling a recurring transfer in case UI money didn't hit the account. Just do the one time transfer twice a month (if paid biweekly for UI). I just remember though it wasn't 2 or 3 days to verify bank. It was more like almost a week. The first time money hit my BofA account I just went and withdraw it a couple days in a row and then deposited it into my checking account at the other bank until my bank info was verified. And I think you get charged if you don't go to an ATM BofA machine. So I had to drive to an actual BofA bank and use their ATM machine. I wasn't giving them a nickel in fees.

Thank you so very much, scraprsmith. I greatly appreciate the additional help. What you have shared makes a lot of sense, so for sure I will do the one time transfer (per your suggestion) each time I get paid, that way I have much more control over my money.

Thanks a MILLION!

There's a form on the website that you can fill out and submit for recurring transfers to your bank account. That's what I did, and the money goes right into my checking account. I haven't seen my card for years, so I don't even know the number, let alone need it.

I'm in NJ and we have direct deposit but I did have to use BofA card for disability during unemployment since disability payments only paid on BofA card.

Form on CA EDD website for DD or BofA recurring transfers?

From the BofA debit card FAQ website:

Question 8. How can I transfer my funds to my checking or savings account?

You may transfer some or all of your benefits to your checking or savings account by performing a one-time or recurring direct deposit transfer online at www.bankofamerica.com/eddcard or by calling customer service at 1.866.692.9374.

Please Note: The Employment Development Department will not contact you under any circumstances to request personal bank account information. Any direct deposit transfer request must be initiated by you through Bank of America.

Ok that's what I thought you were referring to. That's what I referenced/mentioned above earlier in the thread. I always prefer to a manual transfer versus recurring ones, especially if UI deposit doesn't hit on the day it's supposed to and you've set up a recurring transfer on set days of the month.

My deposit doesn't have a set day, when the funds are released, the money goes right into the bank, and I also don't like manual transfers. When I first started getting my unemployment benefits, I had to go into a BofA branch, do a cash advance from the card, then deposit the money into my bank.
