  1. Green bean casserole with frozen green beans and bacon

This recipe did not work for me at all. After baking for 30 minutes, not only were the beans still raw, but the casserole was very soupy. And yes, the beans _were_ thawed when I put it in the oven. I baked it for an additional 15 minutes, but it still was not done. At that point I gave up. The garbage disposal had a nice meal.

I wasn't sure how this would be without the canned green beans, but I liked it even better than the original version. Nice to have a slightly healthier version of an old classic.

I really liked this , it was really easy . I did 1/2 cup 1% milk and 1/4 cup of half & half and about a 1/2 cup of chedder cheese to add even more creamyness to it . Great recipe , I hate canned green beans too. thanks for sharing

Turned out great! I thawed out the beans a bit ahead of time and also cooked them with a bit of water for a few minutes per another suggestion. I added slightly more fried onions to the initial bake. Do make sure you have 18 ounces of green beans!

  5. Green bean casserole with frozen green beans and bacon

The recipe was a hit. I added walnuts to the top of the casserole in place of the fried onions to make the recipe a little healthier. I also substituted the Campbells Healthy Request reduced sodium soup since family members have to limit their sodium intake. For extra pizazz, I added 1 tsp of Mrs. dash lemon pepper sodium free seasoning. I reduced the milk to 1/3 cup after reading the reviews that the consistency was too thin.

Don’t put frozen beans directly in the oven with the soup mixture. Cook them on the stovetop in a small amount of water for a few minutes. You’ll have almost twice as much water/fluid as when you started. Drain them, then add soup/milk & dried onion rings as the recipe instructs. Perfect @ so much better then canned beans.

Can you substitute frozen green beans for fresh?

You can substitute frozen green beans in place of fresh in most recipes; however the frozen beans tend to get soggy compared to fresh green beans. If the recipe is being baked you can use the beans still frozen. If you're going to toss them in a salad then let them thaw naturally.

How do you keep green bean casserole from getting soggy?

If your topping is soggy, it's probably because the casserole itself is too wet. Before you add your topping try to thicken the casserole up with flour or cornstarch so the topping sits on top and doesn't sink to the bottom.

Do you cover green bean casserole when baking?

Stir in green beans and sprinkle French-fried onions on top. Bake in the preheated oven, uncovered, until hot and bubbly in the center, about 30 to 40 minutes.

Is green bean casserole better with canned or fresh?

To kick things up a notch, I also use fresh green beans rather than canned ones because it gives the casserole the most refreshing flavor that's just to die for. That isn't to say that you can't use canned or frozen, if that's easier for you then go right on ahead!
