But is the 2013 Q5 a solid alternative in a competition that is filled with rugged vehicles like the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, the Mercedes-Benz GLK, and the BMW X3? Let’s find out.

The 2013 Audi Q5 is available in four trims, namely, 2.0T Premium, 2.0T Premium Plus, 3.0T Premium Plus, and the 3.0T Prestige. The base 2.0T models come with the turbocharged inline-4 engine, and a host of safety features, with a starting MSRP price tag of $35,900. The 3.0T models, namely the Premium Plus and Prestige trims get the upgraded 3.0L supercharged V6, with prices ranging from $43,900 to $51,400.

There’s also a new hybrid Q5 available that combines the turbo inline-4 with a 54-hp electric motor to produce a total power output of 245 hp. All Audi Q5 models get Quattro all-wheel-drive as part of its standard equipment. The Hybrid variant is available in just the Prestige trim. On the feature front, the Premium trim has all the basic creature comforts and safety tech available, while the Prestige gets the latest Audi Side Assist and Audi Drive Select as standard. Further, plenty of packages in the form of Comfort, S Line, and the MMI Navigation package are also available.

The 2013 Audi Q5 gets more powerful optional engine choices. Having said that, the Q5’s base engine has been carried over, and the turbocharged 2.0L Inline-4 retains the same torquey nature with the power output rated at 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque which helps carry its curb weight of nearly 4,100 lbs. The four-cylinder model is mated to an efficient 8-speed automatic gearbox. This aids the 2013 Q5 to attain a 0-60 MPH time of 6.5 seconds, all the while it crosses the quarter-mile at 13.9 seconds.

Furthermore, the naturally aspirated 3.2L V6 engine has been replaced with a supercharged 3.0L V6 in the Q5 that produces 272 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque which enables the SUV to go from 0-60 mph in just 6 seconds. This particular engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with a standard all-wheel-drive setup. Then there is the new Q5 hybrid, which combines the 211 hp Inline-4 engine with a 54 hp electric motor. Also introduced is the new 3.0L V6 powered turbodiesel Q5.

With the base engine, the 2013 Audi Q5 is underpowered when seen in comparison but that doesn’t make the Q5 a slow vehicle in any way. The Mercedes-Benz GLK is the only vehicle in this competition that gets a V6 as standard, which also makes it the most powerful mid-size crossover SUV in this competition. The Range Rover Evoque and the BMW X3 share similar horsepower output but the latter makes more torque.

With the inline-4 engine, the 2013 Audi Q5's fuel efficiency numbers are quite impressive. Also, with 19.8 gallons of fuel tank capacity, combined with 20/28/23 MPG of fuel economy in city/highway/combined, the 2013 Q5 ends up delivering the maximum driving range among the rivals here. The Mercedes-Benz GLK with its V6 engine has compromised mileage, compared to the BMW X3, which has the most fuel-efficient engine that averages 24 MPG but has the smallest fuel tank at 17.7 gallons. The latter eats into its range but is still better than the Mercedes.

Keeping things minimal yet classy and elegant has always been Audi’s forte. The 2013 Audi Q5 interior is no exception in this case either. Trimmed with rich materials and an abundance of luxury undertone feel up the interior of the Q5. The seats are well-padded and comfortable with ample legroom and headroom in both the front and second row. The Audi Q5 clearly has the most cargo capacity of 29.1 cubic feet of standard space behind the second row, with the seats upright. With the seats folded down, the Q5 opens up its standard cargo space from 29.1 cubic feet to 54 cubic feet of cargo space.

Apart from that, all Q5 models get leather upholstery and walnut trim, power front seats, and if a $4,300 Premium Package is chosen then it can be upgraded to heated front seats and a panoramic sunroof. Higher trims get access to exclusive Milano leather treatment and with a leather instrument panel, stands out as a pretty posh vehicle.

That said, the Audi Q5 does have a pretty well-built cabin which is loaded with convenience and amenities, of which some highlighting ones are:

The 2013 Audi Q5 comes with a 7-inch touchscreen that supports Multimedia Media Interface infamously known as MMI. The Audi Q5 and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque adopt different approaches to cater to a similar audience. The Audi Q5 takes a gentleman’s approach with a plush interior and a brawny styling. The engine is similar to the Evoque but the latter produces more power and comes standard with All-Wheel Drive. The Evoque also takes upon the dirty work that the Q5 might not with its Land Rover pedigree and higher ground clearance. The interior might not be as plush but gets the work done.
