Apple’s 2021 release of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro series boasted tons of fantastic features. As always, they took a giant step forward, pleasing many Apple fans to clamor over them and even to wait patiently for their arrival — even amid slow delivery times and ETAs. However, when you need to upgrade an old phone, don’t shy away from the iPhone 12. It still has a lot of the same great features and may be all you need.

So, iPhone 13 vs. the iPhone 12: What is the difference? In this guide, we explore Apple’s latest iPhone 13 model series and compare it to their iPhone 12 model series so that you may decide which one to go with when you make the jump to a new iPhone.

The Designs

When comparing the iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12, the first thing you notice is the design, so let’s discuss this first. Both devices feature an edge-to-edge display and a glossy back, offered in multiple color options, too.

On the front of each iPhone screen is a Face ID sensor built into a notch cutout. This is where the two differ slightly. The iPhone 12 is a bit larger than the iPhone 13 Face ID notch. In fact, Apple specs state that the iPhone 13 notch is roughly 20 percent smaller, but it is almost unnoticeably taller. Until they go notchless, this isn’t really much of a big deal, but still worth mentioning.

The Displays

The display of the iPhone 13 vs. the iPhone 12 is somewhat similar, but there are a few differences. Both phones offer a 6.1-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display along with a 2532 x 1770 resolution (460 pixels per inch).

The brightness level is where it truly shines. The iPhone 13 offers an upgrade to 800 nits, while the iPhone 12 sits at 625 nits. Even better, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models offer a ProMotion display instead of the iPhone 12’s 60 Hz refresh rate.

The Cameras

Okay, let’s make one thing clear: If you choose a phone based solely on its camera, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max series is the winner. The iPhone 12 camera was pretty impressive until the iPhone 13 entered the scene. Now, we’re talking extra features like Cinematic mode for videos (and not just photos), photography styles, macro photography and night mode portraits enabled by LiDAR Scanner. These are just a few of the impressive new camera additions that Apple has added to the iPhone 13. And the iPhone Mini isn’t bad either.

The Batteries

We all need a long-lasting battery for our phones. So what do the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 have in store for us? Apple has seen a steady battery with the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12, each lasting roughly a full day before needing a charge. So many Apple fans were hoping for better with the iPhone 13 — and they were not disappointed.

With the efficient A15 Bionic chip, Apple says that the iPhone 13 will last 2.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 and, in our book, that’s a big jump. Aside from the A15 chip, the larger battery plays a role, too. Unfortunately, the larger battery added extra weight and thickness to the iPhone 13, too.

The Performance

Another advantage of the A15 Bionic chip inside the iPhone 13 is the enhanced performance. The iPhone 12’s A14 Bionic chip is comparable, offering 4GB of RAM, the same as the A15 chip. However, you won’t find many specs to prove that the A15 is faster. For that, you’ll have to turn to the trusted GeekBench source. Spoiler alert: They did find the A15 Bionic chip to have a slightly faster speed and overall CPU performance.

Make a statement

Those who like the deep blue of the iPhone 12 will enjoy the new blue iPhone 13. It's similar to the iPhone 12 blue, but it's just a tad lighter. It's sure to appeal to anyone who likes cooler hues.

Goes with everything

Despite the new name, Midnight is just black. Whether this is a jet black like back with the iPhone 7 days has yet to be seen. But if you like a color that just goes with everything, then Midnight is the way to go.

Traditional color

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Starlight, which is the new name for a white, silver iPhone. It's similar to the Midnight because silver can go with pretty much anything, but it's perfect for those who prefer something lighter and a bit more elegant.

Bold and striking

If you love red or just want a color that stands out, you can't go wrong with PRODUCT(RED). It's a loud, bold red that will turn heads. Plus, every PRODUCT(RED) purchase contributes to the Global Fund to combat COVID-19.

Rich and lush

Apple has just introduced a brand new green color to the iPhone 13 lineup during the 'Peek Performance' event. This green is a deep, rich hue that is reminiscent of forest green. Fans of the Midnight Green iPhone 11 Pro should appreciate this new shade, and it's perfect for those who want the latest color for the best iPhone and are fans of green.

The green iPhone 13 is launching on March 18, 2022. You can pre-order it on March 11, 2022 at 5 a.m. PT.

This is the newest color from Apple in the middle of the iPhone 13 product cycle. It's lush, rich, and just a beautiful shade of green.

Subtle beauty

Each year, Apple always introduces one brand new color to the lineup that hasn't been seen before. This year, with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, it's the pink. This soft petal pink color is reminiscent of the days when Apple still offered a rose gold option, but without that metallic sheen. This new pink adds a nice, feminine touch to the iPhone lineup, and it's great that it's also subtle so it's not too obnoxious.

Always feeling blue

Blue is another very popular color, and Apple knows this. That's why it has kept a nice, deep blue in the iPhone 13 lineup. This blue may look a tad lighter than last year's, but it's still a rich hue that remains fairly neutral. If you want something dark that isn't just black, then this blue is a good option.

Goes with everything

Black is just a color that you can't go wrong with. Black goes with pretty much everything, and it's impossible to clash with it. This Midnight hue is a nice inky black that even Batman would rock.

Black is just a solid, classic color that goes with everything, and so will this Midnight iPhone.

Shine like a star

Like Midnight, Starlight is another color that is quite neutral and can go well with anything. It's really just white and silver with a new name. If you prefer lighter colors while still being able to match with whatever you're wearing, then starlight is great.

For those who don't like dark neutral colors, the starlight will lighten up the day.

Make a difference

PRODUCT(RED) has been a popular color for years. The red is always a bold and striking shade that is sure to turn heads whenever you're in the room. But there's also more to the PRODUCT(RED) lineup than just color — you're actually making a difference. Previously, any PRODUCT(RED) purchase would donate a small portion towards HIV/AIDS treatment. However, due to the pandemic, PRODUCT(RED) purchases right now will contribute to the Global Fund to combat COVID-19. This is temporary, of course, until the pandemic dies down, but regardless, your PRODUCT(RED) purchase goes towards a good cause. So you not only get a beautiful and daring phone color, but you're making a difference in someone's life.

What's your iPhone 13 color?

While all of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini models have the same internals, what's on the outside is also an essential part of the buying process. After all, you don't want to be stuck with a color that you hate, right?

For most people, the Midnight iPhone 13 is probably the best way to go. After all, it's hard to go wrong with black, and it's always iconic and just goes with everything. If you don't like dark colors, Starlight is a good alternative that remains neutral.

Love green and want something that's colorful, but also a bit neutral? Then the new green color is fantastic. It just launched, and is a close match to the old Midnight Green iPhone 11 Pro. It's a rich and lush shade of green that makes you think of the rainforest.

If you're the type of person that wants to show off that you have the new iPhone, and you also don't mind a more feminine hue, then the pink iPhone is the one to pick this year. Thankfully, this shade of pink is subtle and not overly loud, so it's great for pretty much anyone. But if you want to go darker, then try the blue iPhone 13 — who doesn't like blue, really?

And if you want to have a color that is bold while also making a difference in the world, then go with PRODUCT(RED). It's a totally unique shade, and you'll be contributing to combat COVID-19.
