Have you ever wanted to walk out your door for the day and know if you were going to need your umbrella?

A local forecast scan be helpful, but sometimes you just want a Yes or No answer as to whether it’s going to rain today or not. Right?

is it going to rain today

Well, then here’s a good site for you: Is It Going To Rain Today?

You can see the chance of precipitation where you are, hour by hour.

Using the Is It Going To Rain Today site, simply type in your zip code and you will get a quick answer as to whether it is going to rain or not — based on where you are:

  • Yes – means you have rain coming
  • No – means you don’t have rain coming
  • Maybe – means you should probably take the umbrella

It’s as simple as that!

There’s An App For That, Too!

There is one other quick way to find the answer to these 2 questions:

  • Is it going to rain today?
  • What time is it going to rain today?

It’s the smartphone app called Rain Alarm.

It warns you about any type of precipitation (rain, snow or hail) via notification, vibration, or sound on your phone.

More About Rain Probabilities

Sometimes you want to know more than if it’s going to rain — you might need to know exactly what times throughout the day it will be raining where you are, and what the odds of rain are.

#1 – Soon, you may be able to tell if it’s going to rain or not from your toothpaste dispenser.

The dispenser would send out 1 of 3 different types of toothpaste, depending on the weather — one for colder, one for warmer, and a third for a chance of rain. How wild is that?!

#2 – Did you know?… If a forecast for a given county says that there is a 40% chance of rain this afternoon, that means there is a 40% chance of rain at any point in the county from NOON to 6PM local time.

It does not mean (1) that 40% of the area will be covered by precipitation at given time in the given forecast area or (2) that you will be seeing precipitation 40% of the time in the given forecast area  for the given forecast time period.

#3 – Common precipitation terms:

  • Slight chance = 20% chance
  • Chance = 30 to 50% chance
  • Likely = 60 to 70% chance

I'm a weather geek from Florida who's been studying meteorology and watching weather patterns for years! I enjoy sharing little-known facts and fun stuff about the weather. I especially like sharing interesting details about weather events and conditions that can affect you… and how to prepare for Mother Nature's ever-changing weather patterns.

Is 100% chance of rain a lot?

A 100% chance of rain could mean buckets of rain all day or just a light sprinkle in the afternoon. All you can tell is you are likely to see some sort of precipitation. Likewise, 20% chance of rain means you're unlikely to see any rain at all today, or 20% of the area is going to be drenched.

How do you know if it will really rain?

In general, clouds that are white and high indicate good weather, and clouds that are dark and low mean rain or storms are on the way. White, wispy clouds usually mean that the weather will be clear. Flat clouds mean that the air is stable, while fluffy clouds mean that it is unstable.

Is 70% chance of rain a lot of rain?

60%-70% - NUMEROUS - Much of the area is covered so it's likely you will get wet. 80%-100% - WIDESPREAD - The entire area is covered with showers and storms so everyone gets rain!

Does 100% chance of rain mean it will rain?

So… if the forecaster knows precipitation is sure to occur ( confidence is 100% ), he/she is expressing how much of the area will receive measurable rain.
