Who is the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid Mattress Topper Best For?

When you’re shopping for a mattress topper, it’s important to consider what you are trying to improve about your sleep experience. A mattress topper can make a bed softer, make the surface more conforming, or add more pressure relief, for example. And a mattress topper generally comes at a much lower price point than a new mattress.

Before we get into the review, here’s my quick recommendations on who the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid mattress topper is a good fit for and who may want to consider something else.

Who I recommend the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid mattress topper for

• I would recommend the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid mattress topper for back sleepers, especially those who want to soften up a mattress or need some extra plushness on their bed. This topper offers pressure relief, but still keeps you elevated on the surface of the bed.
• This topper is also a pretty good choice for side sleepers who need just a little extra softness on their bed. If you have a medium or medium-firm bed that is just a bit too firm, this topper will offer some more pressure relief and plushness.
• I would also recommend the ViscoSoft for anyone who wants a pillow top mattress, but isn’t in the market to replace their entire bed. This topper definitely creates a very cozy, soft pillow top feel, but you still get some support from the gel memory foam below.

Who I don’t recommend the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid mattress topper for

• I would not recommend this topper for stomach sleepers. I think it will be too soft and cause stomach sleepers’ hips to sink, which will lead to back pain over time. For a better option, take a look at our best firm mattress toppers.
• This topper is also not a great option for hot sleepers. While it does use gel memory foam, which traps less heat than traditional foams, there are no other significant cooling features and I think the pillow top layer may trap heat easily. I’d recommend taking a look at our best cooling mattress toppers instead.

What is the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid Mattress Topper Made Of?

What materials a topper is made with is largely what will determine how it will feel and perform in areas like cooling or pressure relief. Mattress toppers can be made with a lot of different materials, such as latex, down, or memory foam.

This topper has a dual layer construction with a pillow top layer and a foam layer. ViscoSoft does offer another version of the Serene Hybrid that is a latex mattress topper, substituting the foam for latex, but this review is discussing the Serene Memory Foam Hybrid. 

Pillow Top Cover: The cover of this topper is a down alternative pillow top. It’s 1.5 inches tall and has a 300-thread count. This cover is also completely removable and machine washable. The skirt of the cover has 18-inch pockets that fit around the mattress like a fitted sheet. Additionally, the cover has straps underneath the pillow top that hold the foam in place.

Foam Fill: The second layer of this dual layer topper is a 2.5-inch block of gel memory foam. This foam is CertiPUR-US certified to be free from harmful chemicals and pollutants. 

How Does the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid Mattress Topper Feel

I personally tested out this mattress topper by laying on it in different sleeping positions. To evaluate the feel, I considered the pressure buildup, contouring, and support I felt in various sleeping positions, as well as getting a general sense of what the materials feel like.

It’s important to keep in mind that feel is subjective. You might have a different experience than me lying on this topper if you weigh more or less than I do, if you have back or joint pain, or even if you have a different primary sleeping position.

Overall, I thought that this topper had a medium-firm feel. When I was lying on it, I didn’t feel that I was sinking into the topper very deeply — it felt like I was lying on top of the bed, rather than in it. The foam layer is very squishy and was easy to make an impression in when I pressed into it, but adding the pillow top layer over the foam dampens that effect and spreads your body weight across the foam more evenly. 

Additionally, the quilted down alternative fill pillow top was super soft and cozy, in my opinion. It reminded me of a really nice down comforter, which makes for a really comfortable sleeping surface.

Finally, how a mattress topper will feel will also change depending on what kind of mattress you use it with. Based on testing this topper with multiple beds, here’s how I think it will affect mattresses of different firmnesses.

Soft: Adding this topper to a softer mattress won’t drastically change the feel, because the combination of the pillow top and foam does keep you elevated on the bed. This topper would be a good addition to a softer mattress if you are a side sleeper who wants the added plushness of a pillow top. It could also work for back sleepers who enjoy a super soft bed, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend this for stomach sleepers, who need a firm sleep surface.

Medium-firm: I think adding this topper to a medium-firm mattress would likely lower the firmness to around a true medium feel. This would be a good addition for people who need a little more pressure-relieving from their bed, such as side sleepers or back sleepers who have joint pain. 

This topper won’t offer deep contouring, but I think it will offer some nice relief on pressure points on a medium-firm mattress. If you want to soften your bed, but maintain the feeling of sleeping on top of the bed, this topper should work for you. Again, I wouldn’t recommend this for stomach sleepers, who need that firm sleep surface.

Firm: Using this topper on a firm mattress should bring the firmness closer to a medium-firm feel. I think adding this topper will be the best for back sleepers, who just want to soften up a mattress that’s a bit too firm. For side sleepers, I think that overall the bed will still be too firm. When I tested this topper on a firm mattress, I felt some pressure buildup on my shoulders. And for stomach sleepers, again I’d say it’s probably not going to be firm enough.

My Verdict on the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid Mattress Topper

Overall, I thought the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid mattress topper was a super cozy, medium-firm topper that would be especially good for back and side sleepers. Combination sleepers will also enjoy it, as it has more of a lying on top of the bed feel than a sinking in feel, so it will be easy to move around on and switch between sleeping positions.

I also really appreciated that this topper has a washable cover and that it has the straps and deep pocketed skirt to keep the topper from moving around on top of the mattress. That’s a great feature for people who toss and turn, which could cause a topper to shift.

However, if you are a hot sleeper, I would be aware that this topper may not have the best temperature regulation. The gel foam will trap less body heat than traditional memory foams, but it doesn’t have any perforations for airflow or other cooling features, and I felt that the pillow top may trap some heat.
