Google Voice gives you a phone number for calling, text messaging, and voicemail. It works on smartphones and computers, and syncs across your devices so you can use the app in the office, at home, or on the go. Show NOTE: Google Voice only works for personal Google Accounts in the US and Google Workspace accounts in select markets. Text messaging is not supported in all markets. I wasn’t happy that many features were being removed. But it’s a free service and it’s been useful to have. I don’t use it a lot, but I’ve had Google Voice for years. In fact, I was a Grand Central user, the predecessor to Google Voice. Launched in 2006, Grand Central was remarkable for its time: one phone number that wasn’t tied to an email address, equipment, or carrier. When Google renamed Grand Central to Google Voice, my old Grand Central account was grandfathered in. After reading the news about Legacy Google Voice over the past few weeks, I realized I hadn’t set up one option on my Google Voice account that I would now need: my Google Voice Pin. Oops. Why I Never Set Up Google Voice PinSince Google Voice provided the option to forward all text and voice messages to email, which is the setting I’ve had for years, I always picked up messages via my email account. I never set up the voice pin option to access messages. Which wasn’t a big issue in the past. But it is now, for two reasons:
To set a pin, use a browser on your laptop or desktop computer. (I don’t use Google Voice on mobile, so I don’t know the instructions to follow on mobile.) Sign into the Google/Gmail account for your Google Voice phone number. Visit Google Voice settings to confirm your Google Voice phone number displays on the page (and you’re signed into the correct account). Now visit Legacy Google Voice and follow these steps:
Now you can use the pin number when you want to check your Google Voice voicemail. Or when you port your Google Voice phone number to another mobile service provider. SummaryWith Legacy Google Voice going away sometime this month, you’ll want to act quickly to check to see if you have a Google Voice Pin set up. Or to set one up. I don’t know how long the Legacy Voice page will be available. And I hope Google Voice acts quickly to provide another option for setting your Voice Pin. It’s odd Google Voice hasn’t provided an option in their new interface to set your Voicemail Pin. I’ve searched through their forums and help pages for a link, to no avail. If you find a Voice Pin settings option in the new interface, let me know.
