Green Bean Casserole Ingredients

The ingredients needed for our green bean casserole recipe are similar to the classic recipe but we’ve tweaked it a little to make it the way we prefer it. Scroll down for the complete recipe with ingredient measurements.

  • Condensed Soup: We like using condensed cream of celery soup or cream of chicken soup instead of the classic cream of mushroom. You can choose your favorite or make a homemade sauce like I did in this creamy veggie casserole recipe.
  • Whole Milk: The milk dilutes the cream soup and adds moisture to the sauce.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: We’ve found that adding a little worcestershire sauce add some umami flavor.
  • Onion Powder: This recipe calls for onion powder in addition to the French fried onions. You can substitue the onion powder with dried minced onions or sauted minced onions.
  • Garlic Powder: The garlic powder adds additional flavor. You can add minced garlic if you prefer.
  • Black Pepper: We used coarse ground black pepper to add to the flavor.
  • Green Beans: This recipe uses three cans of drained green beans. If you want to use fresh green beans, you’ll need to cook the green beans before making the casserole.
  • French Fried Onions: There are French fried onions in the casserole and on top!

Is green bean casserole better with canned or fresh?

If your topping is soggy, it's probably because the casserole itself is too wet. Before you add your topping try to thicken the casserole up with flour or cornstarch so the topping sits on top and doesn't sink to the bottom.

Is there a substitute for French Fried Onions in green bean casserole?

If you don't have French Fried Onions you can substitute (for a topping): Dried bread crumbs mixed with butter work well for a vegetable or casserole topping. OR - Use crushed potato chips. OR - Crushed Ritz© crackers add a nice buttery flavor.

Do you cover green bean casserole when baking?

Stir in green beans and sprinkle French-fried onions on top. Bake in the preheated oven, uncovered, until hot and bubbly in the center, about 30 to 40 minutes.
